Well, I can finally contribute to the "What Tire To Get" category.
Pope had Dave of Speeddream build him up a sweet set of wheels. When it came
to the tires I wasn't sure Jon would be into the side walls flex or low durability of the Captain.
His old set of wheels had Werewolfs on and he wanted to try something different. I had read a good review
on the Maxxis Advantage a while back, so we ordered a set for his wheels.
His bike was here for some work, and when I headed out to Troutbrook the other day I took the
opportunity to test his wheels on the Turner.
The ADvantage has a large 2.1 footprint with low-ish profile knobs. the casing is rounded
and it corners and rails just as easily as the Captain. In fact the larger contact patch felt
more confidence inspiring than either the Werewolf or Captain. The tread pattern hooked up
in everything I could find in Troutbrook. Hardpack, loose gravel over hard pack, rocks etc.
The only thing I did thankfully get to test it in was mud. It's strongest point is climbing in
heavy technical. I was cleaning technical climbs with ease that I rarely clean. It was unbelievable how
solidly the tire hooked up.
They are a larger tire than the Captain and maybe even the Werewolf. Logic says they should roll slower
than the Captain. I tried to feel it but couldn't. Given the expense and the hassle of getting the Captains
I may switch once my current set wears out. If you're looking to try something new check them out.
The price and weights are reasonable too.
